A group of our TST students recently took part in this year’s Jubilee Challenge, held alongside the renowned Ten Tors event on Dartmoor. The challenge took place in May and gave our students the opportunity to push themselves, work as a team, and create lasting memories.
The Jubilee Challenge runs alongside the main Ten Tors Challenge and is designed specifically for young people aged 14 to 21 with a range of additional needs. Based closer to Okehampton Camp, participants complete routes tailored to their individual abilities, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to take part, challenge themselves, and experience the sense of achievement that comes with reaching the finish line.
For many of our students, this was much more than just an outdoor event. It was an opportunity to build confidence, develop resilience, and experience the rewards of determination and teamwork. Ten Tors is one of the South West’s most respected youth challenges, held annually on Dartmoor over the weekend following the May Bank Holiday. Its reputation for encouraging perseverance and personal growth makes it a truly special event.
Preparation began several months before the challenge, with students training in all weather conditions. Throughout their training, they developed essential skills including teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and supporting one another through difficult situations. By the time the event arrived, they were well prepared to tackle the long distances, rugged terrain, and unpredictable Dartmoor weather.
We were also incredibly grateful to receive a Moor Boots Grant from the Dartmoor Preservation Association. The grant helped fund walking boots and waterproof clothing, ensuring our students had the equipment they needed to take part safely and comfortably.
The challenge started and finished at Okehampton Camp and is organised by Headquarters South West of the British Army, with support from the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, emergency services, and an incredible team of volunteers who help make the event possible each year.
We are immensely proud of every student who took part. Their commitment throughout months of training, their determination on the day, and the way they encouraged one another perfectly reflected the values we strive to nurture at TST. Congratulations to everyone involved on an outstanding achievement!
