EHCP Annual Reviews: Celebrating Progress and Planning for the Future

For parents and carers of young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), the Annual Review is an important milestone in the academic year. While it can sometimes feel like another meeting to prepare for, it’s actually a valuable opportunity to celebrate achievements, reflect on progress and plan the next steps together.

What is an EHCP Annual Review?

An EHCP Annual Review is a meeting that takes place at least once a year for every young person with an Education, Health and Care Plan.

The purpose is to review how well the current plan is supporting the learner, celebrate the progress they have made and consider whether any changes are needed to help them continue moving towards their outcomes.

As young people move into post-16 education, Annual Reviews become increasingly focused on preparing for adulthood. This means looking beyond qualifications to consider skills for employment, independent living, community participation and personal development.

Who Takes Part?

One of the strengths of an Annual Review is that everyone involved in supporting the learner has the opportunity to contribute.

This may include:

• The young person
• Parents or carers
• College staff
• The Local Authority
• Therapists or other professionals involved in supporting the learner

Most importantly, the learner’s voice should always be heard. Their interests, ambitions and experiences help shape the discussion and future planning.

What Happens During the Review?

Every review is unique because every learner is different, but discussions often include:

• Progress towards EHCP outcomes
• Achievements since the previous review
• What support is working well
• Any new challenges or changing needs
• Aspirations for education, employment and independent living
• Targets and priorities for the year ahead

The meeting is an opportunity to celebrate how far a learner has come, while also identifying practical ways to help them continue progressing.

Preparing for Adulthood

How Families Can Prepare

Before attending, it can be helpful to think about:

• What progress has your young person made this year?
• What have they enjoyed most?
• Are there any concerns or new challenges?
• What goals would they like to work towards next?

Encouraging your young person to share their own thoughts and aspirations can also help them feel more involved in decisions about their future.
